Why pursue a career in insurance?

There’s a lot more to insurance than just selling policies and handling claims. An insurance career allows you to positively impact people’s lives.

The Big Picture: Protecting Assets and Fostering Dreams

Insurance helps individuals and organizations maintain financial security and seize opportunities. You can foster people’s ability to dream big and strive to achieve more by working in the insurance industry.

An Upward Trajectory of Personal and Professional Development

The insurance industry offers countless opportunities for self-development in a highly competitive and dynamic environment. Insurance is vital to the global economy, providing safety nets for organizations and individuals and ensuring financial stability.

Unlock Your Full Potential in a Challenging and Rewarding Career Path

As a globally established industry, insurance provides job security and competitive salaries. In insurance, you work with people from different backgrounds and can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Career Paths in the Insurance Industry

As a claims manager or claims handler, you will be responsible for investigating the validity of claims, analyzing claims, guiding policyholders on how to proceed with claims, monitoring the progress of claims, and ensuring that claims are settled fairly. Claims managers can work for insurance providers, brokers, or independently for a claims management firm. A claims manager can also specialize in certain types of insurance.

Brokers provide expert advice to people who need to buy insurance that fits their needs and budget. Brokers work on behalf of their clients to determine the most suitable insurance coverage and compare and negotiate premiums.

Insurance agents work with insurance providers and are authorized to sell the provider’s insurance products to people or organizations. Insurance agents have an expansive knowledge of the insurance provider’s insurance products. They work with individuals to determine the most suitable insurance coverage. Agents may also liaise with insurance brokers to help insurance buyers get suitable rates and coverage.

In the event of a loss, policyholders can hire loss assessors. Loss assessors work on behalf of policyholders to investigate the loss and present the claim to insurance providers. Essentially, they advocate for the claimant and work to ensure that their claim is settled fairly.

Similar to a loss assessor, a loss adjuster investigates claims and works to achieve a fair settlement of the claim. Loss adjusters work on behalf of the insurance provider rather than on behalf of claimants. Loss adjusters check if the claimant has the right policy if the policy conditions are met, and if the amount required in the claim is appropriate.

Underwriters assess the risk associated with insuring people or organizations. After reviewing the application of the person or organization seeking to buy insurance, they determine their eligibility for coverage and their insurance rates. Underwriters may also coordinate and negotiate with policyholders or brokers.

The insurance industry needs sales, marketing, and accounting specialists to help run the business. You can also find opportunities in customer service, IT, or risk management.

Skills to Thrive in the Insurance Industry

There are essential skills you can develop to thrive as an insurance professional. Besides having comprehensive knowledge of the industry and insurance specifics according to your specialization and location, the skills below are critical to your success:

Communication Skills

Communication is essential to success in any career you pursue in insurance. Insurance is about human connection and understanding the needs and circumstances of other people. Listening and other skills help you achieve this connection on a deeper level and operate with empathy and honesty.
