Young Driver Questionnaire

Whenever you get behind the wheel of a car, it is possible that you may cause damage to other people’s property, injure – or even kill – yourself, other drivers, passengers or pedestrians.

What is Insurance?

Most people don’t have the money to pay for the losses they might cause while driving, so governments require drivers to carry a certain amount of insurance to cover losses they might cause to others.

The premium payments you make go into a large pool at your insurance company. The claims are paid from that pool.

Insurance Coverage’s:

Mandatory Third Party Liability Coverage:
Mandatory coverage’s are required by law and include Third Party Liability and Accident Benefits Coverage.
Third Party Liability Coverage:protects you in the event you are held legally liable for injury or damage resulting from the use or operation of your vehicle.
Accident Benefits:pays for expenses such as medical and rehabilitation costs for individuals involved in an automobile collision, regardless of whose fault the collision may have been.

Optional Coverage’s:
You can also voluntarily purchase additional insurance for your car, including:
Collision:Coverage for damage to your car
Comprehensive:Protection against theft, vandalism and other perils

Insurance Premiums – how are they determined?

Where you live : If you live in the city of Edmonton, St. Albert or Sherwood Park, accidents and vehicle theft are more likely, which may translate into higher premiums.

The type of vehicle you drive : Some makes and models of vehicles fare better in collisions meaning injury to occupants and damage to the car end up being less severe. Also, newer, more expensive vehicles cost more to replace, so they are more expensive to insure.

Your driving record : Your driving record has a big impact on the premiums you pay. A long driving history with no accidents can help keep your premiums down. Every accident where you are ‘at-fault’ will push your premiums up. Speeding tickets and other moving violations will also increase your premiums.

Your statistical group : Your insurer may consider the claims history of the group to which you belong as a driver (a group of drivers of the same age and in the same geographic location). If you belong to a group that is more likely to make claims, your premiums may be higher.

Driver education : Helps to develop the skills, knowledge and abilities new drivers need to drive safely. Successful completion of driver education may result in reduced insurance premiums.

Other factors : In the highly competitive field of insurance, prices are also affected by government regulations, discounts and unpredictable catastrophic events.

Parents : You may experience a reduction of premiums because your parents are insured with the same insurance company. Remember that your driving record could affect your parent’s insurance premiums.

Accidents

Edmonton has 1109 collisions causing injury for every 100,000 residents – almost twice the rate of other major cities. Drivers 16-19 years old are most likely to be involved in accidents than any other age group.

Top three types of accidents:
Following too closely
Running off the road
Left turn across path

What to do if you are in a collision:
Always call the police if:

  • Someone is hurt
  • You think any other driver may be guilty of a Criminal Code offence, such as drunk
  • There is significant damage to your vehicle

If no one is hurt:
Safety first: if it is safe, try to move your car to the side of the road, out of traffic. If you can’t drive your car, turn on your hazard lights.

It can be very stressful and confusing to be in an accident. There is a lot of information that you should note at the time. To help you, we have provided an ‘accident card’ in your pink card wallet.

Jot down the following details about the accident:

  • How it happened
  • The date and time
  • Location
  • The speed of all cars
  • Road conditions
  • Registered owner:
    • Name, address, phone number, name of Insurance Company and Broker, Policy number, Drivers license number, license plate number
  • Passengers: Name, address, phone number
  • Witnesses: Name, address, phone number

We have provided you with a disposable camera that we would recommend keeping in the glove box of your vehicle to take photos of the accident scene.

Prevent Further Loss: if you are involved in a collision, you are responsible for protecting your car from further loss or damage. Your insurance company will, however, pay for this if you have purchased collision or all perils coverage.
